Toe-tappin tunes

Apart from the dress one of the most important things about a wedding I think is the music. It can create such a lovely atmosphere throughout the day and with our old friend Mr Pianoman no doubt there'll be lots of variety on the day.

One weekend we went to Dublin to see a fairly upbeat jazzy-style band. They were really good but just didn't float our boat so it was back to square one. Then we found out about The Weightless Astronauts.
The Weightless Astronauts. They are really sound and played at Dee and Iomar's wedding a couple of years ago. DVD evidence from that night shows me up dancing on the chairs so think that's a good sign for any band! They also played at the Nurses' Ball in NUIG a couple of years ago and got rave reviews from all my nurse friends!

The Corkman wanted a band that would get people up dancing all night long so we went for The Weightless Astronauts, they seem like a bit of craic anyway. For some reason hubby-to-be got a bit obsessed with the song Down at the Red Rose Cafe. I think he wants it to be our first dance...

I know this is really cheesy but I love the lyrics in this and there are loads of different versions: The Way You Look Tonight. Votes please?!

I've looked online for good suggestions but they are all like Celine Dion or Whitney Houston which The Corkman would probably call off the wedding if I said I wanted them as our first dance... Would love to get something quirkyish and non-clichéd. Any ideas for us?!

The songs I really DON'T want are these crowd-pleasers:
Come On Eileen  and I Would Walk 500 Miles An Hour. They just annoy me — they remind me of sweaty oul fools leaping around at the teenage disco back in Castlebar circa 1997. Not good!

More on the music in my next post!

  1. it does not surprise me at all the "cork man" as you so eloquently put it would request a song like that but I'm afraid I'll have to say that cork will get beaten by mayo again this week and side with yourself!!

Anyway back to wedding talk i agree with you not liking those cheesy songs.
I must say i like B's choice of Down at the Red Rose Cafe.

  3. Think I have to side with the Corkman on the Red Rose Cafe! Is that for your first dance? My husband wanted The Pogues 'Rainy Night in Soho' for the first dance and he got his way. Found out after it was Shane McGowans love song to a glass of whiskey.. oh well

  4. What version of "the way you look tonight" are you thinking of? Being to a wedding where the Weightless Astronauts played and they put on a great show. Dance floor full all night so that's always a good sign.

  6. I really think you are right, the band are really important for the big day. With a quirky name like the Weightless Astronauts, they are bound to be a bit of craic! Also if you have a good gang there that are full of the craic thats bound to help!

  7. Hi Sarah, if you click on the link you will hear the version of The Way You Look Tonight - it's Rod Stewart I have up but there are loads of other versions, Tony Bennett, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra! I think it's kinda rosemantic!

  10. Mayo and Tipp can bate Cork anyday in the league they want, we all know it comes down to a sunny day in Sept when the Hogan stand is flowing a bright sea of red!
On the songs front.....do I have to sing it to you while we dance or whats the craic? I'd don't sound a bit like Rod Stewart!!!

  12. That's fighting talk 'himself'. At least you weren't that pore sole Cork fella at McHale that everyone was laughing at at final whistle. My heart went out to him. Oh.....wait...that was you! (",) just joking brian but you have to let us have the odd bit of glory when we have it!
